Salmon PDRN vs Rose PDRN: Which One Belongs in Your Formula

Salmon PDRN and rose PDRN are not the same ingredient with two different origin stories, and the evidence behind them is not equivalent. Salmon PDRN is where essentially all of the human clinical literature sits, and most of that literature is about an injected product rather than a topical one. Rose PDRN is the vegan alternative, and its evidence is preclinical. This is a formulator’s comparison, written by a contract manufacturer that holds both in stock, including the parts that are less flattering to the category than the marketing suggests.

What is the difference between salmon PDRN and rose PDRN?

The difference is the organism the DNA came from, and the body of evidence that came with it. PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a mixture of purified DNA fragments stabilised for cosmetic use. Salmon PDRN is extracted from the milt of salmon or trout, and it is the original form of the ingredient, the one that made the category famous in K-beauty. Rose PDRN is derived from the stem cells of the Damascus rose and is the leading vegan, plant-based alternative, naturally rich in antioxidants and amino acids. They are both polynucleotide materials. They do not carry the same research behind them, and a brand should choose with that in mind.

What does the PDRN research actually cover?

This is the question most PDRN marketing skips, and it is the one that matters. The bulk of the published human work on PDRN concerns salmon-derived PDRN injected into the skin, in a clinical setting. That is a different product, a different route into the body, and in most markets a different regulatory category from a cosmetic. The evidence for topical salmon PDRN is considerably thinner, and the evidence for topical vegan PDRN in humans is thinner still – as of mid-2025 there were no published human clinical trials on topical vegan PDRN at all. A brand can build a very good product on this ingredient. It cannot honestly borrow the injectable literature to describe what a serum does.

Is rose PDRN as effective as salmon PDRN?

Nobody can honestly say yes on the current evidence, and nobody can honestly say no either. What exists for plant-derived polynucleotides is preclinical: cell culture and tissue-model work. There is a further trap worth naming, because suppliers rarely will. Plant PDRN evidence is source specific. Published work on ginseng-derived or peony-derived polynucleotides is not evidence for rose, rice, or yeast-derived material, and it should not be cited as though it were. If you are choosing rose PDRN, choose it because vegan positioning and a botanical story are right for your brand, not because you have been shown a study that was run on a different plant.

Which PDRN belongs in a vegan or cruelty-free line?

Rose PDRN, and this is the one decision in the category that is genuinely clear cut. Salmon PDRN is an animal-derived material extracted from fish milt, so it cannot sit in a vegan line, and it will also be the wrong answer for brands working to certain religious dietary certifications or selling into markets where that matters. Rose PDRN is the straightforward substitute, and it suits fragrance-free and sensitive-skin formulas well. If your range is mixed, there is no reason you cannot run salmon PDRN in one line and rose PDRN in another from the same formulation partner.

How does PDRN appear on an ingredient list?

Usually not as the word PDRN. The INCI designation for cosmetic PDRN is typically sodium DNA, sometimes hydrolyzed DNA. Consumers looking for PDRN on a label will not find that phrase, which is why so many finished products carry it in the marketing copy on the front and sodium DNA in the ingredient list on the back. For plant-derived materials the naming is less settled and varies by supplier, so do not assume – ask for the exact INCI on the raw material spec sheet before your label goes to print.

Why is molecular weight the number that matters?

Because PDRN is a large molecule and skin is a barrier. PDRN is a mixture of DNA fragments with chain lengths reported in the region of 80 to 2200 base pairs and molecular weights in the range of roughly 50 to 1500 kDa. That is enormous next to the actives formulators usually worry about delivering. It is the reason low-molecular-weight PDRN grades exist and the reason the delivery system in a topical PDRN product is not a detail. When you are comparing two raw materials, the molecular weight distribution tells you more than the headline percentage does.

What claims can a topical PDRN product make?

Cosmetic ones, about appearance. A topical PDRN product sold as a cosmetic in the United States can speak to how skin looks and feels – firmer-looking, smoother, plumper, more radiant. It cannot claim to heal, regenerate, or repair tissue, and that is precisely the language the injectable PDRN literature is written in, which is what makes this ingredient a compliance trap. Wound healing and tissue regeneration are drug claims. Lifting them out of a clinical paper and into a serum listing changes what regulators consider the product to be. Keep the claim set cosmetic and keep the substantiation attached to the finished product, not to the raw material’s reputation.

  • Vegan line: rose PDRN. It is the only clear-cut call in the category.
  • Evidence-led positioning: salmon PDRN – but be clear that the strong data is injectable, not topical.
  • Do not transfer plant evidence between sources. Ginseng data is not rose data.
  • Look for sodium DNA on the ingredient list, and confirm the INCI on the spec before printing a label.
  • Ask for the molecular weight distribution, not just a percentage.
  • Keep claims cosmetic. Healing and regeneration are drug language.
